Be Deliberate. Drive Strategy.

Start-up success requires individuals who can pull out all the stops and complete a project at the last minute. This talent is certainly valuable, but a company culture based on putting out fires keeps you on a potentially endless cycle instead of looking towards the future. The success of a start-up is dependent not only on the founders, but the entire team, and creating a culture that fosters growth at all levels of the organization is key to long-term success.

“If you’re going to grow, you have to be intentional.” -Curt Kampmeier

Create a Strategy

Working in the SaaS environment means living in an ecosystem where it is easy to get pulled in a million different directions. Would your organization have more sales if you were operating B to C? Could the return on investment be greater if you went after larger B to B contracts or perhaps you should entertain the idea of an acquisition? The possibilities are endless and without a clear picture of who you are and where you want to go, you could get stuck in a pattern of chasing after promises without ever bringing a project to fruition. To see long-term success, it is absolutely critical for a start-up to take the time to build a strong foundational strategy and follow that strategy in order to build and grow.

Make Deliberate Decisions

Do you have a friend who can never decide on a restaurant for dinner? In order to see long-term success, organizations need to be able to make decisions early and often. Not making a decision is a decision itself and adds a challenge around intentionality. Better to be purposeful and intentional than have to endure the unintended consequences of failing to make a decision. Failing to make timely decisions wastes employee time and resources. Teams need to look at their company strategy and make key decisions regarding conferences, marketing, etc. When organizations make their commitments clear it helps to focus employee time and create a calm culture which aids employee retention and happiness.

There are obviously going to be times when urgent action is needed. When an opportunity presents itself, it is absolutely essential to refer back to the company strategy and make a timely decision whether that means moving forward with the opportunity or passing on it. When quick decisions are necessary it may result in an all-hands-on-deck scenario. Calm can still be maintained by being clear regarding how this opportunity is consistent with strategy and keeping expectations in accordance with the limited time available. Finally, make your gratitude and appreciation known. Ultimately, we all want to work somewhere where we feel appreciated and valued.
