We all understand the importance of traction, especially paid customers. In a startup, it is easy to focus on generating paying customers. But, and this will sound like heresy, not everyone is meant to be a customer. A comprehensive approach to marketing and sales strategy will help better understand your ideal audience.
Let’s look at a few areas to consider when developing a comprehensive marketing strategy
Know your value
When you’ve been working on a product build for months, years, or even decades, you can get so far in the weeds that you can’t see the daylight. It is easy for a founder to focus on the value of their product from their own perspective, but lose sight of the value in terms of their customers. It is critical to take the time to step back and view your product from the perspective of your customers, what problems do they have that you solve?
Accessing your Platform must be SIMPLE
Educators are strapped for time and they place ease of use as being of equal importance to a product’s value to students. Quite simply, if an educator cannot create an account and see your inherent value in under 80 seconds then you have lost the opportunity to capture their attention. Your website and interface must be streamlined and easy to navigate. You must display in very simple terms exactly how easy it is to make an account and utilize your platform with students.
A picture is worth 60,000 words
While your friends, family, and investors might like to hear about raising another round of funding, your potential customers are not likely to click on this type of marketing. That isn’t to say you should post a little about big product wins, but your marketing strategy needs to focus on the problems you solve and the value you provide. You need to understand what problem you are trying to solve and how you can solve it, then, say it with pictures! This strategy needs to be consistent across your brand.
Messages that Resonate
A quality marketing team will be open to changing their minds. Sometimes you build a solid campaign that looks and feels absolutely stellar, and then it bombs. At this point, you regroup, brainstorm, do some quality A/B testing and keep working until you find a message that resonates with your ideal audience.
